I’m a little bit like a raven (coughhoardercough) when it comes to pleasing scraps of paper. I think it stems from the fact that growing up, I always wanted to see/smell/touch remnants from my mother’s life (she grew up in 1950s Chicago), but she hadn’t saved any.
So now, I see them, I grab them, I shove them in my purse, and then I meticulously file them into my blue accordion folder under categories like “lines”, “floral” and “text”.
Then I use them in crafts, take them out to reminisce, or give them away. It’s a great hobby— scrapbooking without the work.
These are the three BEST business cards I have ever received.
1.) FoxWolf Films: Art in motion at it’s most raw revealing & human
Got this one in the nuts aisle in the Traveler’s Rest Super WalMart. While deciding between dry roasted and honey roasted peanuts, a man came up to me, asked me if I was a model or an actress, handed me a card and told me to give him a call. Art in motion??!——can yew say PORN??! Nothanksdude.
2.) Gene Simmons: Look-A-Like, Parties and Events
I was the bartender at a little Greek restaurant outside of Pittsburgh for a summer, and a guy came in who looked a hell of a lot like Gene Simmons. I said, “Hey, did anyone ever tell you you look like Gene Simmons?” and I received this card in response. Simple as that!
3.) Prabhu Yogananda: Yogi, Himalayas, India.
A friend and I were chatting with an elderly ochre-robed Indian man in the Frankfurt airport as we waited to board the plane to New Delhi. He introduced himself as a yogi, told us that he lived in a hut near bears and snakes, and mentioned quietly that he would be glad to be of help should we need counsel in “spiritual matters” as he slipped me his card. I love that his address is simply “Himalayas”, yet he has two cell phones and an email address. Only in India!

I have a fascination with old things— I’ve had it since I was young. I’ve always loved old books— I love their stiff binding, musty scent, antique text… I’ve been sniffing old books for as long as I can remember. Stemming from my love of old books, I have amassed a collection of old paper-goods—- that, while being almost completely useless (OK-I-ADMIT-IT!), makes me happy.
Each scrap I salvage is a little insight into someone else’s life. I like that. Totems from the past.
Which is exactly why I drove towards Asheville this rainy mountain Saturday to investigate the antique shacks that litter the sides of US-25 N between Greenville and Asheville.
In one shop, I happened upon a box of GOLDEN old photographs from someone’s travelogue of the South Eastern USA. I grabbed a handful, gave the man at the counter a dollar (ONE DOLLAR!) and went on my merry way.
These pictures are old, you guys, and they are beautiful. What’s more, is that each one has text on the back, written in beautiful cursive. They must have been pasted in some journal that’s now no more. The words, detached from their sentences, combine to create a sort of whimsical-mountain ghost-poetry.
I feel compelled, in many ways, to go back and buy the rest of the box, and try to assemble this person’s path across the USA. A few women frequent the pictures… I’d like to find out who they are, as well. Maybe I will! For now, I’ll post them on my Tumblr for all of us to enjoy. There are some amazing shots here!

…. and I like to do drawrings.
I don’t feel like this is “done”— but it’s just a doodle, so maybe it never will be. This is the first page in my sketchbook and I’ve been coming to it to warm up before I get serious!
When I look at this, I see that I included a few things I love:
